People often hear Science fiction and think of space travel, aliens and fantasy - that kind of science fiction often turns me away. I love science fiction which points us towards a different reality, a different set of rules which allow us to better examine our societies and our lives. To give us a glimpse into what could be if we were to take the wrong path or to talk about things in an abstracted way which would be overly political to discuss directly.
Setting the mood
I’d like my articles to be multi sensory experiences - leaning into quotes, imagery, music and videos to set the tone of the piece. On top of this, I hope this curation can expose you to media you enjoy.
Science fiction is the most important literature in the history of the world, because it's the history of ideas, the history of our civilisation birthing itself. ...Science fiction is central to everything we've ever done, and people who make fun of science fiction writers don't know what they're talking about.
— Ray Bradbury
Modern science fiction is the only form of literature that consistently considers the nature of the changes that face us.
— Isaac Asimov
If science fiction is the mythology of modern technology, then its myth is tragic.
— Ursula K. Le Guin
My top 10 favourite Sci-fi films
These films are not ranked by an objective metric - they are films which frame interesting questions and show a mirror onto ourselves. I hope you get as much out of these films as I have.
I have intentionally left out incredibly popular films such as 2001: A space Odyssey, The Matrix, Bladerunner, etc as I’d like to expose people to films that they may not have heard of.
